Students in Mrs. Burke’s 5th-grade class explored plant and animal cells this past week by building models and comparing organelles in both! Hands-on learning like this helps deepen their understanding as they write about each structure’s function. #WildAboutLearning #WCESWarriors

Read Across America Week is celebrated from March 2 to 6 — it begins on the birthday of the beloved author, Dr. Seuss. The entire month of March, in fact, is dedicated to reading. The National Education Association (N.E.A.) aims to encourage reading and educate people about its benefits, especially among children and young adults. Please join us as we encourage our students to read. We will celebrate each day with a different theme. There will also be different literacy activities in the library all week long!

Black History Month was created to focus attention on the contributions of African Americans to the United States. It honors all Black people from all periods of U.S. History, from the enslaved people first brought over from Africa in the early 17th century to African Americans living in the United States today. Please join us as we celebrate these important people and events in history.

I am pleased to share a recent hands-on learning experience from Ms. Amerson's and Ms. L. Cooper's homeroom science classes, where students engaged in an immersive exploration of ecosystems right beneath their feet. During this activity, the students dug deep into leaf litter to uncover a variety of biotic (living) and abiotic (nonliving) components that make up an ecosystem. This hands-on approach not only sparked their curiosity, but also provided them with valuable insights into the intricate relationships within the natural world. The enthusiasm displayed by our students as they discovered various elements of the ecosystem was truly remarkable, highlighting the importance of experiential learning in fostering a deeper understanding of scientific concepts. We look forward to more engaging activities that inspire our students' love for science and their appreciation for nature.

Our 3rd graders are WILD about our learning in Science class. They discussed the 5 Georgia Regions and created a project. After an in-depth lesson on each region, students chose the area they wanted to learn more about. Each student had to complete a travel log containing information about the culture, land features, location, plants and animals, and any famous or important places in that region! Thank you for being WILD about learning at WCES!
